English for Academic Purposes I || Age: 13 & Above || 9:00am–10:30am || Fees $2,400 || Class Size 12

Students in these courses will be involved in the use of English for academic purposes. They will focus on developing critical literacy and analytical skills when reading and responding to a range of text types. They will also be supported and guided with school assignments and shown how to achieve good results. This course enables students to seek support for school assessment which they may be having difficulty with in relation to what the task requires.

Teaching objectives

The student will:

  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Develop the ability to read texts critically and analytically
  • Use a variety of strategies to prepare for writing (for example, identifying the key questioning words and using appropriate schematic structures to construct texts)
  • Use the passive tense in formal presentations
  • Begin to use modality when constructing texts
  • Build a sophisticated vocabulary
  • Construct more detailed and oral pieces by providing evidence to substantiate main ideas
  • Write a first draft focusing on meaning rather than accuracy
  • Produce polished copy after conferencing and editing
  • Experiment with basic and less familiar adjectives, adverbs and punctuation markers
  • Use of a variety of language features to enhance speaking and writing
  • Pronounce words correctly and use appropriate stress and intonation patterns
  • Attempt to use appropriate gestures when speaking.

English for Academic Purposes II || Age: 15 & Above || 10:30am–12:00am || Fees $2,400 || Class Size 12

Students in these courses will be involved in the use of English for academic purposes. They will focus on developing critical literacy and analytical skills when reading and responding to a range of text types. They will also be supported and guided with school assignments and shown how to achieve good results. This course enables students to seek support for school assessment which they may be having difficulty with in relation to what the task requires.

Students in these courses will be involved in the use of English for academic purposes. They will focus on developing critical literacy and analytical skills when reading and responding to a range of text types. They will also be supported and guided with school assignments and shown how to achieve good results. This course enables students to seek support for school assessment which they may be having difficulty with in relation to what the task requires.

  • Use appropriate modality in the construction of texts
  • Build a more sophisticated vocabulary
  • Construct more detailed written and oral pieces by providing evidence to substantiate main ideas
  • Produce polished copy after conferencing and editing the first draft
  • Experiment with less familiar adjectives, adverbs and punctuation markers
  • Use of a variety of language features and technical terms to enhance speaking and writing

  • Research skills – a folio consisting of research and analysis of four different texts related to a chosen theme.
